Each year, communities come together on Giving Hearts Day to celebrate the spirit of generosity and support nonprofit organizations that make a meaningful impact. Held annually on the second Thursday in February, this day has grown into one of the most significant 24-hour giving events. Whether you’re new to Giving Hearts Day or a seasoned participant, here’s why it’s a day worth marking on your calendar.
What is Giving Hearts Day?
Giving Hearts Day was launched in 2008 by the Dakota Medical Foundation, Impact Foundation, and Alex Stern Family Foundation. The goal was simple yet powerful: to create a single day focused on charitable giving and amplify the positive work of nonprofits. Since its inception, Giving Hearts Day has raised millions for causes ranging from healthcare and education to the arts and environmental conservation.
How Does It Work?
The concept is straightforward: individuals are encouraged to donate to their favorite participating nonprofits during the 24 hours. Many donations are matched by generous sponsors, doubling the impact of each contribution. With an easy-to-use online platform, donating is simple and accessible. This year, the NDSC is participating in Early Giving for Giving Hearts Day, which begins January 13th.
NDSC Scholarship Fund:
For the past 10 years, NDSC has implemented the NDSC Scholarship Fund, which allows us to provide safety training to organizations and communities who desperately need the training but lack the resources to access it. We’ve given nearly $50,000 in free training over the past decade, to more than a dozen organizations. Those organizations include Morton Mandan Public Library, Carrington City Library, ND Roughrider Health Promotion Association, Bridging the Dental Gap, Century High School AVID students, Northland Health Center, to name a few. In 2025, the NDSC will return your donations to schools or other nonprofits through our NDSC Scholarship Fund. Your generous donation enables us to provide life-saving education and training to those who couldn’t afford it otherwise. Through our scholarship program, we have helped dozens of organizations create safer communities. By giving to the NDSC Scholarship Fund, you’re not just donating — you’re investing in safety and saving lives.
