Steven’s Credentials

Steven Mayer is a law enforcement officer with more than 25 years of experience.  He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and master’s degree in homeland security.  Steven has studied active shooter incidents extensively and earned his Active Shooter Instructor Certification through FLETC in Artesia, New Mexico.

Steven started his career in corrections where he learned about safety and security in great depth, including tactical active shooter response. Throughout his training as a LE Officer, Steven has been a weapons instructor and currently teaches active shooter response to law enforcement students and officers.

During his collegiate studies, Steven studied CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design) as one of his courses.  This has allowed him to understand how to use the environment to assist in making schools and businesses more secure and safe. Steven has experience serving on school safety committees to help with the implementation of policies and procedures to assist schools with making them safer and more secure.

Steven is also a ND Peace Officers Standardized Testing Instructor and completed the Methods of Instruction curriculum that is required to teach certified law enforcement classes that are recognized by the POST Board.

What do you do at NDSC?
I am a safety and security consultant. I teach active shooter, reasonable suspicion classes and conduct security assessments on schools and businesses.

Why is NDSC’s mission to prevent injuries and save lives important to you?
I have worked in law enforcement for 27 years and have seen and studied active shooter incidents. I believe preparedness is paramount to reducing injuries and fatalities. NDSC is a proactive organization which tries to prevent incidents from happening and prepare people should they occur.

What are your hobbies?
I like to hunt, fish, golf and brew beers, wines and meads.

Name one really interesting thing about yourself.
I have brewed a national award-winning mead.

What other talents do you have?
I train dogs for search and rescue as well as for police work. This has allowed me to travel throughout the world training agencies and individuals who help find missing and endangered people.

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why?
Germany or Switzerland. I would like to see my family’s roots.

Favorite singer/band/song?
Anything by U2. I love all their songs.

If you could change something about yourself, what would it be?
Be less vertically and follicly challenged.

Biggest pet peeve?
Crappy drivers

What animal most closely matches your personality?
Bloodhound. Very stubborn and hard to train.
