There have been 27 motor vehicle fatalities in North Dakota since May 8, bringing the 2021 total to 56 as of July 12. That’s 12 more fatalities than the same time period in 2020, and two more than the same period in 2019.

As summer ramps up, so does hazardous material transportation on North Dakota’s roads and highways. The NDSC in partnership with the ND Highway Patrol encourages motorists to exercise extreme caution when encountering trucks with hazmat loads, and to never pass a hazmat truck stopped at a railroad crossing.

The temperatures are climbing throughout North Dakota. When it’s hot outside, it’s even hotter inside a car. In just 10 minutes, the heat inside a car can become deadly.

As families head to the lake, the backyard or the badlands this summer, a campfire may be tempting, but it isn’t worth the risk. North Dakota’s drought continues, and fire danger remains high. Longtime Assistant Executive Director, Lynae Hanson, retired in April from the North Dakota Safety Council. After the announcement of her retirement, we hired two new positions and promoted a few staff members.

This year, we distributed 48 awards to companies and individuals representing multiple industries including transportation, manufacturing, construction, and oil and gas.

The NDSC has been awarded an OSHA Susan Harwood Curriculum Development Grant to develop an agricultural safety course targeted to employers who perform agricultural operations, with a focus on youth employees, those new to farming and other small businesses in the agricultural industry.
