2024 Safety Award Recipients
Our Safety & Health Awards program is designed to promote incident prevention by honoring companies with outstanding safety programs, employees with superior safety records, and North Dakota citizens who have gone above and beyond to improve the safety and health environments in their communities.
“As a statewide non-profit, we are dedicated to preventing injuries and saving lives. Each of these award winners plays a significant role in helping to develop a stronger safety culture in our state. We’re proud to have them as partners on this journey,” says our executive director, Chuck Clairmont.

Taylen Mendoza
In February of 2025, Deputy Taylen Mendoza was dispatched to a single-car rollover accident. The driver was found unresponsive at the scene after being ejected from the vehicle. Deputy Mendoza was the first to arrive and began chest compressions. The driver was responsive to the CPR but remained unconscious, and after stopping breathing again, Deputy Mendoza started a second round of CPR after being unable to find the man’s pulse. EMS and Ambulance eventually arrived on scene to continue care before the man was transferred by Air Med. The man has since recovered from his injuries. Thank you, Deputy Mendoza, for your quick actions and commitment to safety.
Cody Printz and Aaron Biegler
In May of 2023, A Bobcat employee known for more than 10 years for his reliability and punctuality was late to work with no prior notice. His supervisor informed Aaron Biegler, the man’s friend and team lead, about the unusual situation. After trying to reach him with no response, Aaron and another coworker, Cody Printz, decided to take an early break and check on the man at his Wahpeton home. After reaching the man’s home they found him in his bedroom with a black and blue eye, but they assumed he was ill and resting and returned to work. However, Cody’s intuition told her something wasn’t right, and she returned to his house a few hours later, discovering blood and that the man’s head was now swollen with a large cut…she immediately called for medical help. The man was rushed to the hospital where they discovered he suffered a severe stroke and three brain bleeds. He spent 30 days in intensive care before being released. He was able to return to work after months of therapy. The man firmly believes that his coworkers at Bobcat saved his life. If they didn’t understand his character, work ethic, and follow through, taking the initiative to personally check on him, he may not be alive today.
Thank you, Cody and Aaron!
Troy Karlberg
In May of 2024, Troy Karlberg was at a wedding reception for a former coworker and friend’s daughter. During the reception dinner, the bride’s grandmother choked on her food and quickly became unconscious. After the Heimlich maneuver was unsuccessful, Troy and another woman started CPR and further attempts to dislodge the food…there was no AED on site. The woman’s airway eventually cleared, but she remained unresponsive. Troy continued CPR until paramedics arrived. Later that night, Troy’s former coworker, who had gone to the hospital with her mom, returned to the wedding dance, hugged Troy, and said, “You saved my mom.”
Troy is the man you want in the room in the event of an emergency. He’s been an EMT for 30 years and spent 25 years in Law Enforcement. He now trains between 100 and 175 people in CPR each year as part of his Safety role at Minnkota. Please join me in thanking Troy Karlberg!
Matt King, Daniel Nill, Chad Stollenwerk, Matt Granholt
In September of 2024, the team at Minn-Dak was working on the beet harvest. On this day, one of the workers was celebrating his 49th harvest. Chad Stollenwerk a piler operator at the Gorder piling site near Galchutt, North Dakota began calling out for help after seeing his longtime friend have a medical emergency. Chad was able to get the attention of Matt Granholt who called 911 to start getting emergency services on scene. Others quickly stopped traffic near the location. Chad was able to run to the scale house and retrieve an AED. Daniel Nill, a fellow truck driver and Matt King were then able to assist Matt Granholt in performing CPR and also utilizing the AED. The man was eventually airlift before being treated and released. The man’s doctor said his survival was “attributed to the exceptional CPR and quick thinking of these 4 men.” Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative safety team had only recently placed new AEDs at the scale houses of their piling sites in hopes of being proactive. Thank you, Chad, Daniel, Matt and Matt!
Jon Jelinek
In March, a woman went in to see her chiropractor Dr. Jon Jelinek with sciatic pain. During her assessment, Dr. Jelnick told her he wouldn’t do an adjustment, as he didn’t think something was right. He told her she needed to get into a primary doctor soon. She called the doctor but was told there were no openings. Dr. Jelinek took over, called and asked to have her seen right away. A CAT scan showed a brain bleed the size of a golf ball. She was immediately sent to Sanford Fargo. She spent 2 days in ICU. The woman who nominated Dr. Jelinek said, although I realized Dr. Jelinck is a doctor…he made sure his patient wasn’t just a number, and didn’t brush aside her side effects, showing care and compassion. Thank you, Dr. Jelinek.
